At St Gregory’s we love History! Whether it is investigating our ‘Personal History’ in Foundation Stage, learning about ‘Significant Britons’ in Key Stage 1 or finding out about ‘Early Civilisations’ in Key Stage 2, we just want to know more! Also, we have a growing archive of primary sources linked to the history of St Gregory’s, even down to the order forms and measurements for classroom furniture. Made to measure desks? Who knew!
Learning is rooted in enquiry alongside teachers promoting historical thinking and the acquisition of historical knowledge and understanding, including chronological understanding. By learning important aspects of local, national and world events and the histories of cultures other than their own, our children are able to relate to others, identify themes and understand why things needed to change.
Our History curriculum allows children to look at in depth studies as well as taking a broad overview of themes of interest to them whilst developing a curiosity to set them up for future studies beyond Primary History.
The New Primary Curriculum, from September 2014, will open up new opportunities in History that otherwise sat in high school history lessons. This includes; creative geniuses such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel or Christina Rossetti, early Britons and settlers and relations between England, Wales, Scotland and France. Fantastic!
